Sentence Correction: Comparatives - Superlatives

The reason that China has become largest manufacturer of consumer goods in the world is that it has the ability to provide huge work forces at low costs and, therefore, offer prices that cannot be competed with.

Incorrect.

This answer choice is grammatically incorrect because of the misuse of the Superlative form indicated here by the use of the word largest. Largest must be preceded by the word the. In this sentence, largest is preceded by become.

While this answer choice corrects the original Superlatives error by adding the required article "the" before the Superlative form indicated by the use of the word largest, it is still grammatically incorrect. The Superlative form requires that the group under comparison be defined. However, this answer choice does not provide information about the group of which China is the largest manufacturer of consumer goods.

In order for this Superlative to be complete, this group must be defined, for example by keeping the original's "in the world".

This answer choice is grammatically incorrect and repeats the original Superlatives error as it misuses the Superlative form indicated here by the use of the word largest. Largest must be preceded by the word the. In this sentence, largest is preceded by become.

Although this answer choice corrects the original Superlatives error by correctly using the Superlative form the largest manufacturer...world, it is stylistically flawed. Using both the reason and because is redundant. This error is a Specific Redundancy that should always be corrected.

What helps us identify this question as a Redundancy question as well as identify this mistake is the following Stop Sign:

the reason + because
