Sentence Correction: Comparatives - Superlatives

Child psychologists recommend surfing as a sport for adolescents as it probably has highest influence on self-confidence of any sport.

This answer choice is grammatically incorrect because of the misuse of the Superlative form indicated here by the use of the word highest. Highest must be preceded by the word the. In this sentence, highest influence is preceded by has.

Although this answer choice corrects the original Superlative error by adding the before highest, it commits another Superlative error. The Superlative form requires that the group under comparison be defined. However, this answer choice does not provide information about the group of which surfing has the highest influence on self-confidence.

In order for this Superlative to be complete, this group must be defined.

Although this answer choice corrects the original Superlative error by adding the before highest, it is stylistically flawed. Changing the sentence from active to passive creates Redundancy. Since there is another grammatically correct answer choice that doesn't use the passive form, it is preferable to this one.

Active (more concise): Child psychologists recommend surfing as a sport for adolescents.
Passive (less concise): Surfing is being recommended by child psychologists as a sport for adolescents.

Well done!
