Sentence Correction: Subject Verb Agreement - A Complex Subject/Long Distance between Subject and Verb

Norway, a constitutional monarchy in Northern Scandinavia, is one of the wealthiest countries in the world and NATO was founded by it along with eleven other countries in 1949.

This answer choice is stylistically flawed. Using the passive form (NATO was founded by it) creates redundancy. Since there is another grammatically correct answer choice that does not use the passive form, it is preferable to this one.

Although this answer choice eliminates the original Stylistic error by changing the sentence from passive to active, it changes the meaning of the original sentence by replacing founded by found. Norway did not find NATO, but instead founded it. Founded means establish, launch, or set up.

Although this answer choice eliminates the original Stylistic error by changing the sentence from passive to active, it is grammatically incorrect: the singular subject Norway does not agree with the plural verb are.

What helps us identify this question as a Subject Verb Agreement question and identify the mistake is the following Stop Sign:

A long complex subject / a long distance between the subject and the verb

Well done!

Using the passive form (NATO was founded by it) creates redundancy. This answer choice corrects the redundancy by changing the sentence to the active form.
