Sentence Correction: Relative Clauses - One of the + plural noun + who/which/that

Matthew Barney is one of the contemporary artists that uses digital media whereas Brett Whitely, a painter and sculptor from Australia, uses traditional methods.

This answer choice is grammatically incorrect. The relative clause that uses digital media describes the noun that appears immediately before it, namely, contemporary artists. Since artists is plural, the verb that follows it also needs to be plural. However, uses is singular.

What helps us identify this question as a Relative Clause question as well as identify the mistake is the following Stop Sign:

one of the + plural noun + who/which/that

Whenever you see this Stop Sign, make sure that the following verb is plural.

This answer choice is grammatically incorrect and repeats the original Relative Clause error.

Although this answer choice corrects the original Relative Clause error by matching the plural verb use to the plural subject contemporary artists, it creates another grammatical error. The singular subject Brett Whitely does not agree with the plural verb use.

What helps us identify this question as a Subject Verb Agreement question as well as identify the mistake is the following Stop Sign:

A long complex subject / a long distance between the subject and the verb

Although this answer choice corrects the original Relative Clause error by matching the plural verb use to the plural subject contemporary artists, it contains the awkward phrase the methods that are traditional which creates redundancy.

That's right!
