Sentence Correction: Preposition Questions - Split Constructions

Gardeners that look and nurture their plants are rewarded with a colorful, serene, and inspirational environment.

This answer choice is grammatically incorrect. The verb look requires a preposition in order to correctly connect to their plants. One cannot look a plant - one can look after a plant.

Whenever the first verb requires a preposition after it and the second verb does not, the preposition must not be omitted:

Incorrect: John cares and loves Jane.
Correct: John cares for and loves Jane.

What helps us identify this question as a Split Construction question and identify the mistake is the following Stop Sign:

A split construction: Verb A + and/or + Verb B + object

Although this answer choice corrects the original Split Construction error by adding the preposition after, it is grammatically incorrect. The first item in the list is a noun (color), but the second and third items are adjectives (serene, inspirational).

In a list of 3 or more items, all the items should be in the same part of speech or of the same type of the part of speech (all nouns, or all verbs, or all adjectives...).

What helps us identify this question as a Parallelism question as well as identify the mistake is the following Stop Sign:

A list of 3 items or more, separated by commas and and/or before the last item.

Although this answer choice corrects the original Split Construction error by adding the preposition after, it is grammatically incorrect. The second item in the list is a noun (serenity), but the first and third items are adjectives (colorful, inspirational).

Great work!

The verb look requires a preposition in order to correctly connect to their plants. This answer choice solves this error by adding the preposition after. It also maintains Parallelism in the list at the end of the sentence by using adjectives only.
