Sentence Correction: Subject Verb Agreement - Verb Precedes Subject

Which word is the subject of the following sentence?

Before our amazed eyes was a white unicorn.

The verb in this sentence is was, which is in the singular form. The subject must be something that performs that action - something that was. Only the word unicorn is a singular noun which agrees with was. To be sure, try to change was into its plural form and see what noun must change -

Before our amazed eyes were white unicorns.

In order to agree with the plural verb were, we had to change the noun unicorn into its plural form - unicorns. This tells us that unicorn is the subject.

When testing for Subject Verb Agreement, we must look at the verb and ask what the subject of the verb is, i.e., what or who performs that action, and be aware that the subject can come after the verb.

The word before describes where the unicorn was. It cannot perform the action of the sentence (before can't be, or was) so it is definitely not the subject.

The correct answer is unicorn.
