What is the subject of the following sentence?

White blood cells, red blood cells, platelets and plasma, which makes up 55% of the volume of normal blood, are the main components of blood.

Very good!

In 95% of the cases, and this sentence is one of them, the subject comes before the verb. In this sentence, what comes before the verb are is White blood cells, red blood cells, platelets and plasma, which makes up 55% of the volume of normal blood. For the purpose of subject identification, we can ignore the part between the two commas. That leaves us with White blood cells, red blood cells, platelets and plasma.

While the phrase White blood cells is part of the subject, it's not all of it.

While the phrase red blood cells is part of the subject, it's not all of it.

While the word platelets is part of the subject, it's not all of it.

While plasma is part of the subject, it's not all of it.

While plasma is part of the subject, the phrase which makes up 55% of the volume of normal blood is not. This phrase is separated from the rest of the sentence by two commas. The purpose of this separation by commas is to show the reader that the part between the commas is not an integral part of the sentence.

This phrase includes both the subject and a part which is not the subject.

The phrase which makes up 55% of the volume of normal blood is not part of the subject. This phrase is separated from the rest of the sentence by two commas. The purpose of this separation by commas is to show the reader that the part between the commas is not an integral part of the sentence.
