Sentence Correction: Subject Verb Agreement Questions - Overview

What is the subject of the following sentence?

John, Jane, and their three children are having dinner. 

John is part of the subject, but not all of it. The verb are is plural, so the subject should also be plural whereas John is singular.

While Jane and their three children is part of the subject, it is not all of it.

Correct!

While three children is part of the subject, it is not all of it. 

While their three children is part of the subject, it is not all of it.
