Sentence Correction: Subject Verb Agreement Questions - Overview

What is the subject of the following sentence?

In 2004, Jane met John.

In 95% of the cases, the subject is what comes before the first verb EXCEPT what's separated from it by a comma. The comma separates In 2004 from the rest of the sentence, telling us that it's not an integral part of the sentence.
